About

Welcome to the Shop

Olin College has re-imagined its Shop from a traditional, production-focused facility to an active learning environment. A large focus of the initiative was and still is on student growth and development. The Shop is charged with integrating the College’s fabrication resources within the curriculum in a meaningful manner. This means better aligning the Shop with academic courses, increasing accessibility of equipment and spaces and establishing a culture of safety and stewardship with the Olin community. Several of the Olin courses developed or redesigned in the past few years now use fabrication resources in innovative and novel ways.

The Shop is a collaborative space for learning and innovation; a space to learn, to create, to iterate, to invent and to mentor.

The Shop’s mission is to empower all interested community members to use and master the tools of  fabrication and prototyping through training and guidance. The Shop strives to ensure that students, faculty and staff are part of a compelling, educational, safe and inclusive learning environment. It is our intent that these community members, from all backgrounds and perspectives, will be well served by the Shop. The diversity that students, staff and faculty bring to the Shop is a resource, strength and a benefit. It is therefore our intent to present materials and activities that are respectful of diversity: gender, gender identity and expression, sexuality, disability, age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race and culture. Suggestions for improvement are encouraged and appreciated.

Our objective is to ensure that the Shop is accessible and inclusive and that we welcome and support people of all backgrounds, viewpoints, experience, talents and ideas. If you require accommodations, we are happy to help! Please email us and we will work with you to find or create accommodations that best suit your needs.
