Fall 2016 
 

Three orchestral arrangements for 26 players -- 7 violins, viola, 5 cellos, 3 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, clarinet, 2 bass clarinets, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, piano, glockenspiel, timpani.

  • Shostakovich “Waltz No. 2” from the Suite for Variety Orchestra. Shostakovich scored this version of “Waltz 2” for 2 flutes, oboe, 3 clarinets, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, 2 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, timpani, glockenspiel, and strings. 
  • Mozart Overture to the Magic Flute.  Mozart wrote the overture to his opera The Magic Flute for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, alto and tenor trombones, bass trombone, timpani, and strings (16 violins, 6 violas, 4 celli, 2 double basses).  
  • Gershwin ‘selections’ from An American in ParisAn American in Paris calls for 3 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, and strings (34 violins, 14 violas, 12 cellos, 8 double basses).  NB:  I took the first half of American, created an ending before the Andante ma con ritmo deciso, so OCO could perform it during fall 16.

 

Spring 2017
 

Three orchestral arrangements for 24 players -- 7 violins, viola, 4 cellos, 3 flutes, piccolo, oboe, 2 bass clarinets, 2 tenor trombones, bass trombone, piano, glockenspiel, woodblock, snare drum, timpani.

  • Louis Prima/Benny Goodman/O’Brien Sing, Sing, Sing. Scored for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, bassoon, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, drum kit, bongos, tambourine, xylophone, piano, electric guitar, bass guitar, and strings.
  • Gershwin An American in Paris (complete). Gershwin scored An American in Paris for 3 flutes, piccolo, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 clarinets, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 4 hours, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, bass trombone, tuba, timpani, percussion, and strings (34 violins, 14 violas, 12 cellos, 8 double basses).

N.B.  Creating a good arrangement of American for OCO was especially challenging because OCO only had 1 oboe and a pocket trumpet spanning the orchestral mid/upper range which the original covers with another oboe, English horn, 2 clarinets, 3 trumpets, and 4 horns.
